About Us

Since 1993, Foothill Resource Management has prepared over 400 timber harvesting plans and Non-industrial Timber Management Plans for a large number of landowners.  Steve Q. Cannon, RPF #2316, has been a forester since 1976 and has worked for the USFS in four states, Utah State University, Weyerhaueser Co., and the U.S. Agency for International Development in two Latin American countries.

Getting Started

During this time I attended Utah State University and Joined the USDA Forest Service.

1974-77

1977-79

Peace Corps

Stationed in Honduras where I served as the Assistant District Chief on 110,000 hectare management unit.  Designed a compartment inventory system and developed a training manual for Honduran forestry technicians to use in the planning of timber sales.

El Dorado National Forest

Timber sale preparation forester, inventory forester, timber sale administrator, acting Timber Management Officer.  I evaluated environmental impacts and prepared environmental documents as mandated by the National Environmental Policy Act.  I was also the Team Leader and supervisor of interdisciplinary teams of resource professionals in the evaluation of land management projects.

Back to honduras

My position was the primary Forestry Advisor to the Agency for International Development and the Honduran government.  Primary duties included the development of a lump sum timber sale preparation program for the forestry agency of the Honduran government.  I also developed a system of timber sale administration patterned after the USFS Region 5 model.  I wrote training manuals in Spanish for sale preparation, sale administration and sale appraisal and environmental evaluation, as well as numerous other technical documents.  I developed a program for training technicians and trained over 100 forestry technicians in harvest plan preparation, cruising and logging operation management.

Company Established

After serving as the Liaison Section Chief for the Inter-Regional Timber Theft Task Force at the Sacramento office from 92-93 I left to start my own company Foothill Resource Management.  

1993-Present

1997-Present

Purchased 138 acree tree farm

 I manage based upon a long-term sustained yield management plan (NTMP) approved by the State of California.  I have also become licensed by the State of California as a licensed timber operator and have become proficient in the operation of heavy equipment and a mobile sawmill. 

Amador county resource conservation district

Since 1998, I have been a director of the Amador Resource Conservation District and served as president of the board of that district in 2001.  As a director, I have co-written successful grants (>$400,000) for fuel break and watershed protection projects in Amador County.  I also serve as a volunteer member of the local Farm Bureau Ad-hoc Water Committee and the Amador Weed Advisory Group.
